On May 15, <abbr>HIFF@HOME<\/abbr> will premiere the Best of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Academy for Creative Media at <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>&#8212;a compilation of the best films produced by its students. This collection of 10 films was selected by the festival organizers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope the viewers are able to see the talent that is present in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and being nurtured at <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> since its inception,&rdquo; <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Chair <strong>Christine Acham<\/strong> said. &ldquo;These filmmakers have unique perspectives and styles, and HIFF has been a wonderful and prestigious festival for the students to premiere their work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> program has a long-standing partnership with <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>. <strong>Chris Lee<\/strong>, the founder and director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Academy for Creative Media System, wanted a prominent venue to showcase films by <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students. In 2004, Lee and <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> worked out an arrangement for the original <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Night, an event held annually since.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>ACM<\/abbr> filmmakers have also gone on to have careers and success both in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, on the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> mainland and internationally,&rdquo; Acham said. &ldquo;We hope, of course, that seeing the showcase will encourage more young artists from across the islands to apply to and join our department.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Best of <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa at <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p>Two films are by current <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students, and eight films are by alumni when they were students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gavin Arucan<\/strong>: <em>The Girl and the Kappa Monster<\/em> (2019) is about Hiriko, a lonely, young Japanese woman, who develops a close friendship with an injured kappa monster, but it takes a stronger grip on her life than she would like.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kalilinoe Detwiler<\/strong>: <em>Uproot<\/em> (2019) is about a girl named Ami who stands in front of her mother\u2019s grave and recounts her mother\u2019s cries, struggles and abuses at the hands of her father.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kristle Backe<\/strong>: <em>Sincerely, Kaye<\/em> (2018) follows the life journey of a girl learning to find acceptance with her childhood upbringing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Erin Lau<\/strong>: <em>Little Girl\u2019s War Cry<\/em> (2014) is about what a young Maori girl does when violence stains her childhood and family.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kali Kasashima<\/strong>: <em>N. King<\/em> (2014) is about Kalani who goes on his first hold up driven by money and the search for his place in life. But his worst fears are realized when things don\u2019t go according to plan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alexander Bocchieri<\/strong>: <em>No More Aloha<\/em> (2013) is about how two Hawaiian men struggle to find their place in an increasingly modern <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, while trying to cope with the loss of a close friend.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kristin Kouke<\/strong>: <em>Emily at 2:30<\/em> (2012) is about a young woman who leads a solitary life of routine that is interrupted when she begins to receive mysterious packages on her doorstep.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;Aina<\/span> Paikai<\/strong>: <em>Moke Action<\/em> (2009) is set in a gritty section of West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, due to an accidental incident, two men\u2019s egos get the best of them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ty Sanga<\/strong>: <em>Follow the Leader<\/em> (2006) stars Kenji who longs to be a part of a group but is constantly stepped on. He befriends an outcast kid named Joseph, and by standing up for Joseph, Kenji stands up for himself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kaliko Palmiera<\/strong>: <em>Steve <span aria-label=\"Maii\">Mai&#699;i<\/span><\/em> (2004) was a seminal figure in local music and the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Arucan created his film as part of an animation class and it was the second short film he created in <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;The screenplay was inspired by the Japanese folklore of the kappa monster, which I adapted into a story about toxic relationships. Since animation is very time consuming, I developed a simple, but stunning art design and &lsquo;staccato&rsquo; style of animation to make production go by a little faster while still being effective.&rdquo; Arucan is graduating this spring and will be working on several films.<\/p>\n<p>Detwiler, who is graduating this spring with a <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English<\/a> and creative media with a focus on animation and a minor in <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/music\/\">music<\/a>, said animation is difficult work. However, watching the pictures move together in the end is the reward. &ldquo;I chose to visually interact between the past and the present through two different styles of animation.&rdquo; This summer, Detwiler will work as a mentor with the <span aria-label=\"\u014clino\">&#699;\u014clino<\/span> Arts summer animation program and will enroll in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa English <abbr>MA<\/abbr> program this fall.<\/p>\n<p>Backe said she often went off script during the filming of <em>Sincerely, Kaye<\/em>. &ldquo;I learned so much about myself and the openness of the people around me all because of vulnerability. I discovered the beauty of the film was creating my own peace with the past.&rdquo; Since graduating, Backe said she is currently working on a personal film about a dive shop in Palau where her and her friends grew up.<\/p>\n<p>Lau is a senior producer\/director for Jubilee Media, a digital media company based in Los Angeles. She said her film <em>Little Girl\u2019s War Cry<\/em> was one of six projects selected by <em>FilmRaro<\/em> to be fully funded, shot and premiered in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. &ldquo;Once we arrived in Rarotonga, we ended up shooting, editing and premiering the film to the community within one week.
