University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Department of Mathematics<\/a> Professor Monique Chyba<\/strong>, and graduate students Corrisa Heyes<\/strong> and Mahshid Bagheri<\/strong> have created a video<\/a> explaining the contributions mathematics plays in informing decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

“The goals were to illustrate the importance of data-driven science, articulate the value of collaboration between different fields and highlight the difficulty in predicting possible scenarios related to COVID-19,” Chyba said.<\/p>\n

The information is based on research from Chyba, Associate Professor Yuriy Mileyko<\/strong>, and graduate and undergraduate students. The team is working with urban planners and Karl Kim<\/strong>, executive director of the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center<\/a> at UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

The video was created for Ka Pilina Noʻeau<\/span><\/a>, a 3-year research project led by Associate Specialist Kiriko Takahashi<\/strong> and Associate Professor Hye Jin Park<\/strong> and their team at the UH<\/abbr> Center on Disability Studies<\/a>. The program will kick off its virtual learning series with Chyba\u2019s presentation “Modeling and Data Driven Prediction for COVID-19” on May 16 at 10 a.m. via Zoom. Ka Pilina Noʻeau<\/span> is funded by the Native Hawaiian Education Program in the U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Education to improve mathematics and science outcomes of K–8th grade students.<\/p>\n
