The economics graduate, who started her academic journey in 2014 by taking online classes at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a>, is the first <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> student to have successfully completed almost all of her courses via distance learning programs through Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/departments\/index.cfm\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>\u2019 (<abbr>CSS<\/abbr>) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/global-college\/aloha-pathway-online\/\">Aloha Pathways program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I get emotional thinking about graduation, because it hasn\u2019t been an easy journey given my circumstances,&rdquo; said Sedeno, a 24-year-old mother of two girls. &ldquo;I would define the successes that I experienced as graduating with my economics degree, maintaining a high GPA in the process, and never quitting or taking a break from school, no matter how many times I\u2019ve wanted to.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSS<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong> said, &ldquo;We are so proud of Marlene\u2019s accomplishments. She is an inspiring example to anyone hoping to pursue an online <abbr>UH<\/abbr> bachelor\u2019s degree. Her tenacity demonstrates the reality of earning a college degree while beautifully balancing family and work commitments.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CSS<\/abbr> developed its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/cssonline\/index.html\">online degree courses<\/a> for students seeking more flexibility in pursuing their higher education, while retaining the personalized attention and access to resources that they would find in a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom. &ldquo;With Marlene\u2019s successful experience through our Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> partnership, we believe that we\u2019ve found the right mix that provides students, who are juggling school and other demands, with an alternative that suits their current needs,&rdquo; said Konan.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding the Aloha Pathway<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_118033\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118033\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-mcgowan.jpg\" alt=\"Marlene McGowan \" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-118033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-mcgowan.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-mcgowan-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-mcgowan-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-118033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marlene Sedeno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sedeno, an <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> native,  graduated from Mililani High in 2014. &ldquo;I had my daughter while still in high school and, immediately after graduating, enrolled at Leeward as a part-time student taking online classes for an associate\u2019s degree while working part-time as a waitress,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>In her second year at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, she discovered which subject matter resonated with her. &ldquo;I wasn\u2019t sure about what I was interested in at first, but then I took an economics class and found the concepts compelling,&rdquo; Sedeno said.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when the idea came to her: Why not pursue a bachelor\u2019s degree online at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa after taking core courses at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, where credit hours were more affordable? Sedeno <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/L2M\">thanks academic advisors at both campuses<\/a> for turning her dream into a reality.<\/p>\n<p>At Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, Sedeno, who is Native Hawaiian, was classified as a liberal arts major. She met <strong>Kalei Ruiz<\/strong>, an academic advisor familiar with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/native-hawaiian\">Native Hawaiian Center at <span aria-label=\"Puuloa\">Pu&#699;uloa<\/span><\/a> support program and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcc.hawaii.edu\/kaieie\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kaieie\">Ka&#699;ie&#699;ie<\/span> program<\/a> that helps <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College students transfer to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;My love for my native culture and language flourished, because of the kumu who taught these classes, and how Kalei guided me through these courses,&rdquo; said Sedeno. &ldquo;He was also proactive, suggesting which classes I should take at Leeward for a smooth transition to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The timing was perfect. <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> had just launched an integrated, fully online economics degree, so Sedeno could access academic advising and support at the flagship <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus as well. &ldquo;Although I was a distance learner, I was still able to connect with my economics academic advisor at M\u0101noa, <strong>Dawn Nishida<\/strong>. She offered counseling appointments for me on the phone, and connected me with other campus resources. She continuously supported me, rooted for me and became familiar with my needs, even though we met only once in person during my entire enrollment at M\u0101noa. Dawn made me feel vested in the campus and community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Grateful for support<\/h2>\n<p>As she heads toward graduation, Sedeno looks back on the online Aloha Pathways program with optimism that her bachelor\u2019s diploma will lead to a solid career with a non-profit organization.
