Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) reports that the highest rate of <abbr title=\"coronavirus 2019\">COVID-19<\/abbr> positive cases in several <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> states, including <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, are among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (<abbr>NHPI<\/abbr>) more than other racial and ethnic groups.<\/p>\n<p>The research showed as high as 217.7 cases per 100,000 in <abbr>NHPI<\/abbr> residents in at least five states&#8212;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, California, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The rates of <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> positive cases within these states are greater than those reported for African Americans and American Indians, two racial\/ethnic groups that have been receiving much of the national attention regarding <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> risk.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117289\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117289\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-kaholokula-k-headshot-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Keaweaimoku Kaholokula\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-117289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-kaholokula-k-headshot-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-kaholokula-k-headshot-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-jabsom-kaholokula-k-headshot.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keawe&#699;aimoku Kaholokula<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indigenous peoples share similar concerns that put them at an increased risk for <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> and other related problems. These include limited access to healthcare services, more chronic and infectious diseases and poorer economic and living conditions. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These are all long-standing health concerns for indigenous people that predate the arrival of <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr>, but they are even more concerning now,&rdquo; said <strong><span aria-label=\"Keaweaimoku\">Keawe&#699;aimoku Kaholokula<\/span><\/strong>, professor and chair of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/dnhh\/\">Department of Native Hawaiian Health<\/a>, who has been tracking and analyzing the data.<\/p>\n<h2>Issues linked to higher risk<\/h2>\n<p>According to Kaholokula, the higher risk of infection among <abbr>NHPI<\/abbr> is linked to preexisting and underlying inequities in the social determinants of health across racial and ethnic groups that are ubiquitous in the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High rates of chronic disease.<\/strong> <abbr>NHPI<\/abbr> have among the highest rates of these chronic medical conditions, and associated mortality rates, compared to other ethnic groups in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as well as the larger <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>High rates of smoking and vaping.<\/strong> <abbr>NHPI<\/abbr>, especially adolescents and young adults, have the highest rates of smoking and vaping compared to other racial and ethnic groups. Poor access to quality health care.
