Initially designed as an in-person event to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/cis\/\">Communication and Information Sciences<\/a> <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> program, the research conference was moved online bringing together four departments from three colleges.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-cis-online-conference-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"more than a dozen zoom conference screens\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-117261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-cis-online-conference-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-cis-online-conference-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-cis-online-conference.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The virtual conference on April 24, highlighted research in the internet technology, management and policy spaces, and was organized by <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> students <strong>Alicia Takaoka<\/strong> and <strong>Yiting Wang<\/strong>. It featured students, faculty and alumni from three countries. <strong>Trisha Lin<\/strong>, an associate dean for research in Taiwan and <strong>Chamil Rathnayake<\/strong>, a lecturer in media and communication in the <abbr title=\"United Kingdom\">UK<\/abbr>, were among the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumni keynote presenters.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Students saw the strength of our alumni network,&rdquo; <abbr>CIS<\/abbr> Program Chair and School of Communications Professor <strong>Jenifer Winter<\/strong> said. &ldquo;Students mentioned that their research and career aspirations were inspired by these interactions. And, of course, our alumni enjoyed interacting with students and professors.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As we planned the event, we sought to welcome the uncertainty about what would be happening in our lives on the day of the conference and create a relaxed feel that would be welcoming, no matter our circumstances. Among our attendees were alumni in New York City, the Bay Area and other areas under particular stress due to COVID-19,&rdquo; Winter added.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CIS<\/abbr> program spans four departments across three colleges and is jointly administered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">Information and Computer Sciences<\/a> (natural sciences), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">Library and Information Science<\/a> (natural sciences), <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> (social sciences) and <a href=\"http:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/itm-home\">Information Technology Management<\/a> (Shidler College of Business).
