Thompson School of Social Work<\/a> have come together to help other University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> students who are facing financial burdens due to the <abbr title=\"coronavirus\">COVID-19<\/abbr> pandemic. In April, the Phi Alpha, Nu Sigma (<abbr>PANS<\/abbr>) Chapter, an honor society for bachelors\u2019 and masters\u2019 students in social work, made a $1,000 donation to the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Foundation\u2019s Urgent Student Relief Fund.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/give\/giving-opportunity\/covid-19\">Support the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Student Relief fund and <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>PANS<\/abbr> officers stated that the donation was spurred by their roles as future social workers. While the <abbr>PANS<\/abbr> funds would typically be used to help pay for club activities such as an induction ceremony, student socials, a department graduation celebration and a scholarship donation, the <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> pandemic brought many of their planned activities to a halt, giving the officers the option to use their funds to assist <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students in need.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-honor-society-wide-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"ribbons and flowers\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-116984\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-honor-society-wide-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-honor-society-wide-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-honor-society-wide.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our treasurer notified the rest of the executive board that we had extra funds left and she suggested that we donate some of our proceeds to an emergency relief fund to help university students,&rdquo; <abbr>PANS<\/abbr> President <strong>Julia Anne Baccaro<\/strong> said. &ldquo;We unanimously agreed to donate to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s Urgent Student Relief Fund.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Baccaro added, &ldquo;As aspiring social workers, it is our kuleana (responsibility) to care, respect and service the most vulnerable groups and individuals in our community.
