We must support our future journalists and communicators.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificmediaethics.org\/carol-burnett-fund-1\">The Carol Burnett Award for Responsible Journalism<\/a> was established in 1981 by the actress and comedienne to honor outstanding students who have demonstrated a strong sense of journalistic responsibility and integrity. These two honorees displayed strong ethical journalism practices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Graduating senior <strong>Geneva Diaz<\/strong> is news editor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manoanow.org\/kaleo\/\"><em>Ka Leo O <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/em><\/a>, a communications intern at <abbr>AARP<\/abbr> and will be interning at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiibusiness.com\/\"><em>Hawaii Business Magazine<\/em><\/a> as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiispj.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Chapter-Society of Professional Journalists<\/a> intern this summer. She has demonstrated her openness to different viewpoints in many stories, including her article about the challenges facing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island farmers over the misleading branding of Kona coffee and in her story that exposed mold problems in a <span aria-label=\"Moiliili\">M\u014d&#699;ili&#699;ili<\/span> apartment complex.<\/li>\n<li>Senior <strong>Cassie Ordonio<\/strong> was <em>Ka Leo<\/em> managing editor and has been an intern this spring at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/\"><em>Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/em><\/a>, where she will continue this summer as a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Chapter-<abbr>SPJ<\/abbr> intern. She has dealt with ethical issues as a Micronesian journalist covering bias against Micronesians in the workforce as well as a story about k\u0101naka maoli views of the Thirty Meter Telescope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Previous winners of the Carol Burnett awards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/03\/08\/carol-burnett-degree\/\">met with Burnett backstage<\/a> after one of her recent shows in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The following are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> scholarships that provide financial support for students who meet the criteria and <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> requirements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Ed Sheehan Scholarship Fund in Journalism<\/strong> is for journalism majors with a 3.0 <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> or higher and is given in honor of the late radio host, author and columnist.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nathan Bek<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Georgia King-Johnson<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Katie Lane<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Charissa Porter<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Elizabeth Ufi<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The James H. Couey, Jr. Memorial Scholarship<\/strong> is for journalism majors with a 3.0 <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> or higher and is given in honor of the late publisher of the <em>Honolulu Star-Bulletin<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sophia Compton<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Louise Hess Miller Journalism Awards Fund<\/strong> is a scholarship that supports journalism majors and graduate students of academic merit who have financial need.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rhea Saura<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Lori Gregg-Hammer<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Pierre Bowman Memorial Scholarship<\/strong> for journalism majors with at least a 2.0 <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> is given in honor of the late <em>Honolulu Star-Bulletin<\/em> entertainment editor, who had a passion for culture and the arts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alyssa Rodello<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Anika Wheeler<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fund administered by <a href=\"https:\/\/ssri.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Social Science Research Institute<\/a> in the College of Social Sciences:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The F.R. Moulton Scholarship<\/strong> is an aid fund for journalism majors in honor of F.R. Moulton, a scientist who was also a pioneer in educational broadcasting in the 1930s.
