During the week of April 12, the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> cafeteria cooked about 1,200 meals a day Monday through Friday. Local non-profit organizations are serving as meal site partners, who handle food pick-up and distribution of to-go meals at eight sites throughout <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re producing meals for children who are out of school and are usually eligible for free and reduced lunch, but during this interruption, the school lunches that are available may not be offered in all the schools (or children may not be able to get there to pick these up),&rdquo; said <strong>Daniel Leung<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> culinary arts program coordinator. &ldquo;What we feel is that at least we can provide at least one nutritious meal a day, with a kitchen that meets all the <abbr title=\"\nUnited States Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr> guidelines.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education data for the current school year shows almost 85,000 students qualify for free and reduced-price lunches.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without the community feeding program that we\u2019re doing right now, I think there\u2019s a lot of children that wouldn\u2019t have meals that we\u2019ve been able to provide,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Culinary Arts Operations Manager <strong>John Mizokawa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Community collaboration<\/h2>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_116763\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116763\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people packing food containers\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-116763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers box the food at P\u0101lolo Valley Homes.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<div style=\"float:right;clear:right;margin:0 0 0 15px;\"><figure id=\"attachment_116760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116760\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-4.jpg\" alt=\"three children holding food containers\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-4.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/kapiolani-community-meals-4-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meal participants receive the food.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>In addition to the usual rigorous food sanitation and safety measures that the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> culinary arts program follows, COVID-19 protocols are being practiced. The <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> cafeteria staff are also working to scale up to maximum capacity of about 1,500 meals a day. It\u2019s a true community effort, with collaborators such as La Tour Bakehouse and Zippy\u2019s working to develop products for the program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the things we try to do is work with the local suppliers,&rdquo; said Mizokawa. &ldquo;We work with farmers that are producing produce and beef and things like that, trying to utilize those products so that those farmers get some sort of income stream.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The community feeding effort has received support from Walmart Foundation, Harold K. L. Castle Foundation, the Ulupono Fund at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Foundation, the Healy Foundation, Kaiser Permanente and various individual donors. <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/12951804\">The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Foundation has also set up a web page for others to support the program.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With increasing unemployment, the numbers of hungry children and vulnerable community members are likely to rise dramatically.
