Graduate students at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a> created the <em>Social Work Student Survival Handbook <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> Edition<\/em>, a resource guide for social work students to finish out the semester successfully.<\/p>\n<p>The survival handbook is <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vRG7pENM7NFvP03NM9P4qX5C4o_UB-JYU8AW3svbI-_DPhOJDYnn7Y9veILk2z9A-wg1Wiat4ZtVSFE\/pub\">published online<\/a> and available to all social work students. It is regularly updated with academic resources for students and the most current <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> information.<\/p>\n<p>The survival handbook helps students foster social support, streamline access to resources and information relevant to classes, personal safety, health and well-being, and provides opportunities for students to receive or create field hours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116639\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116639\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-student-handbook.jpg\" alt=\"social work student survival handbook \" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116639\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-student-handbook.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-student-handbook-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-social-work-student-handbook-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116639\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Social Work Student Survival Handbook <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> Edition<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope our fellow classmates feel a sense of solidarity and community,&rdquo; said <strong>Rosanna Prieto<\/strong>, a master of social work candidate. &ldquo;With so many <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> emails, notifications and announcements it can be overwhelming, so we wanted one place that has all the updates for them. We created a space for their voice, experience and ways to support each other.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The project started with <strong>Lilinoe Kauahikaua<\/strong>, a master of social work candidate and vice president of the Department of Social Work Graduate Student Organization (<abbr>DSW-GSO<\/abbr>), sending out the k&#257;hea (call) to her hui (group of friends) N&#257; Koa <span aria-label=\"Hookaulike\">Ho&#699;okaulike<\/span>. The survival handbook grew as a student-led initiative with the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Women&#8217;s Center, M&#257;lama Project, <abbr>DSW-GSO<\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"Department of Social Work\">DSW<\/abbr> Nu Sigma and other individual student leaders. The entire project has received guidance and support from the School of Social Work faculty and Dean <strong>Noreen Mokuau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Right now, a portion of information is relevant specifically to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa social work students,&rdquo; said Prieto. &ldquo;But we hope this handbook translates to support for all students and families touched by <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> in some way. We\u2019ve provided information from financial assistance to free subscriptions to exercise programs. People across the country are coming together to support each other and we invite those who feel called to participate in this effort to reach out.
