Students in the bachelor of science in nursing and doctor of nursing practice (<abbr>DNP<\/abbr>) programs are volunteering to assist at healthcare facilities and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Health. <\/p>\n<p>The Queen\u2019s Medical Center, Kahuku Medical Center, Waimanalo Health Center, The Institute for Human Services and the Department of Health have partnered with <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa nursing in providing student volunteers who are assisting with answering phones and questions on <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> and other health-related issues. Other nursing students are assisting with patient transport and with the screening of patients, employees and visitors for fevers and other medical issues.<\/p>\n<p>The school is preparing students, faculty and staff for the <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> response by providing training on epidemiology, immunizations and herd immunity, surveillance, screening during epidemics, outbreak investigation, epidemic response and personal and family preparedness. <a href=\"http:\/\/go.hawaii.edu\/AgG\">The free online course modules are available to all nurses and healthcare workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116607\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-nursing-robertson-m.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Robertson\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-nursing-robertson-m.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-nursing-robertson-m-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-nursing-robertson-m-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Robertson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Matthew Robertson<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>DNP<\/abbr> candidate who is projected to graduate in 2021, is a volunteer at the Department of Health.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m extremely grateful to be in a position where I can help with such a large pandemic,&rdquo; said Robertson. &ldquo;That&#8217;s why I\u2019ve been going to school, to assist in situations like this.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>A significant demand is being placed on the entire nursing workforce, according to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Manoa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene Dean <strong>Mary G. Boland<\/strong>, adding, &ldquo;Major hospitals have expressed interest and are looking at ways for nursing students to provide support as they prepare to care for a possible increase in <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> patients.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The students are to help while earning the clinical hours required to graduate, thanks to the school\u2019s long standing partnerships with healthcare facilities, community health agencies, the Department of Education and the Department of Health.
