Armstrong<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Luke Berrigan, a soon-to-be junior at King Kekaulike High School on Maui, is the latest to receive academic recognition for his work in astronomy, guided by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a> (<abbr>IfA<\/abbr>). Berrigans research on the origin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/20\/an-interstellar-visitor-unmasked\/\"><span aria-label=\"Oumuamua,\">&#699;Oumuamua,<\/span> an interstellar asteroid first spotted by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> astronomers<\/a>, was awarded second place for the Best in Category for Physics and Astronomy at the 2020 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Science and Engineering Fair.<\/p>\n<p>The odd interstellar object first detected in 2017 by <abbr>IfA<\/abbr>\u2019s Pan-STARRS facility on Haleakal&#257;, brought worldwide focus once again to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> observatories and earned an <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> name meaning &ldquo;distant messenger reaching out to us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71091\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-ifa-oumuamua-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71091\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-ifa-oumuamua-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-ifa-oumuamua-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/manoa-ifa-oumuamua.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-71091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This artist&#8217;s impression shows the first detected interstellar asteroid <span aria-label=\"Oumuamua\">&#699;Oumuamua<\/span>. Kornmesser)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Berrigan\u2019s project, &ldquo;Investigating the Source of <span aria-label=\"Oumuamua,\">&#699;Oumuamua,<\/span>&rdquo; involved finding a source of the object\u2019s trajectory toward the solar system from its last known home in the galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>As a ninth-grader in 2018, Berrigan became interested in the <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/15\/astronomy-program-for-hawaii-high-school-students-prepares-future-science-leaders\/\"><abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> (Hawaii Student\/Teacher Astronomy Research)<\/a>. The one-week astronomy &ldquo;camp&rdquo; is designed to immerse students in the scientific process of inquiry, research and presentation skills. Guided by his <abbr>IfA<\/abbr> mentor and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/histar\/\"><abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr><\/a> director <strong>J.D. Armstrong<\/strong>, Berrigan launched his study on the mysterious cosmic visitor. This interest culminated in awards at both the Maui District and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Science Fairs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What I love about the <abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> program is that it lets young people like me who have an interest in astronomy to come and learn about it and do projects with it,&rdquo; he explained. &ldquo;J.D. was my mentor. Space has always fascinated me, so the long term goal is to be an astronaut.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>HI STAR<\/abbr> program is in its 13th year.
