The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gf.org\/news\/foundation-news\/2020-guggenheim-fellowship-winners-announced\/\">Guggenheim Fellowship<\/a> is one of the major competitions for the arts and other fields.<\/p>\n<p>Womack is among a diverse group of 175 writers, scholars, artists and scientists from the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> and Canada to receive the achievement. The candidates were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants in the foundation\u2019s ninety-sixth competition. <\/p>\n<p>Womack plans to use the fellowship to write a geomungo (a plucked Korean instrument) concerto for virtuoso Yoon Jeong Heo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-womack-don-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-116175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-womack-don-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-womack-don-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-womack-don.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m thrilled and honored to have my work recognized and I am grateful for the support <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has provided, and especially for my wonderful colleagues in the music department,&rdquo; said Womack. &ldquo;It\u2019s gratifying to see that our long-term efforts to build our music composition program are paying dividends, as we are now garnering international recognition for both our individual faculty members and our program itself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am thrilled that Professor Womack&#8217;s talents and accomplishments have been recognized nationally. It speaks to the excellence of our faculty and our music department,&rdquo; said <strong>Peter Arnade<\/strong>, dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/arthum\/\">College of Arts and Humanities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A professor of composition at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa since 1994, Womack also serves on the faculties of both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/cjs\/\">Center for Japanese Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/koreanstudies\">Center for Korean Studies<\/a>. His music brings together a diverse range of ideas, reflecting various influences: his background as a native of the Southern Appalachians, his longtime home in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and his time spent in East Asia. He is the composer of nearly 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments and voice. Womack is widely recognized as a leader in intercultural composition and often integrates Asian and western instruments. <\/p>\n<p>Womack&#8217;s music has been performed on six continents by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, Russia Ulan Ude Symphony, Changwon Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Korea, National Gugak Center Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra and Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, among many others.
