You are invited to submit entries for three creative writing contests for the chance to win cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Patsy Sumie Saiki Award<\/strong> recognizes the best short story that reflects the history, cultures or traditions of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First place: $1,000, second place: $250 and third place: $100<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Stephen C. &#38; William H. Stryker Award for Fiction<\/strong> rewards the best short story on any subject.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Winner: $500<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The Academy of American Poets Prize<\/strong> recognizes the best poem on any subject.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Winner: $100 and a one-year Academy of American Poets membership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The contests are hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/creative-writing\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Creative Writing Program<\/a> in the Department of English. The deadline is April 30, and winners will be announced in May.<\/p>\n<p>Submissions must be emailed as a Word document or <abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr> to Interim Creative Writing Director <strong>Craig Santos Perez<\/strong> at <a href=\"mailto:csperez@hawaii.edu\">csperez@hawaii.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Entries must follow these guidelines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Typed<\/li>\n<li>Double spaced<\/li>\n<li>12 pt. font<\/li>\n<li>Cover page with your name, address, telephone number, student <abbr title=\"identification\">ID<\/abbr> number and the title of the contest you are entering (you may enter more than one contest).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;These contests motivate students to revise and polish their work, applying the lessons they have learned in their writing courses,&rdquo; Santos Perez said. &ldquo;It is always the highlight of our year to read the submissions and recognize the winners at the end of the year English department reception.
