{"id":115745,"date":"2020-04-10T09:00:25","date_gmt":"2020-04-10T19:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=115745"},"modified":"2020-04-09T16:19:56","modified_gmt":"2020-04-10T02:19:56","slug":"uh-hilo-student-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/10\/uh-hilo-student-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds turn to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo student\u2019s website during online learning transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/hilo-student-corner-banner.jpg\" alt=\"Student Corner banner\" width=\"676\" height=\"222\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-115713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/hilo-student-corner-banner.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/hilo-student-corner-banner-300x99.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/hilo-student-corner-banner-130x43.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A web platform co-founded by a student at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> is quickly gaining traction during the COVID-19 pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/studentcorner.io\/\">Student Corner<\/a>, a site where students can publicly post projects and research has piqued interests during <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>\u2019s historical transition to distance learning.<\/p>\n<p>The online program is the brainchild of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo computer science student <strong>George Donev<\/strong>. &ldquo;Our user base is growing exponentially and there are hundreds of students using it every day, with a hundred or more added each week,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/27\/uh-student-startups-awarded-40k\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> student-led startups awarded $40<abbr title=\"thousand\">K<\/abbr><\/a>, February 27, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In March, Student Corner was awarded a $20,000 grant by the <a href=\"http:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> (<abbr>PACE<\/abbr>) program at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Shidler College of Business. The funding is through <abbr>PACE<\/abbr>\u2019s new Liftoff Advisors program. &ldquo;It\u2019s like an investment but without the equity strings attached, which is really nice,&rdquo; says Donev. &ldquo;We\u2019re using the grant to reinvest in the business and help it grow more quickly.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In an interesting twist, Donev hired one of his instructors, <strong>Ted Shaneyfelt<\/strong>, a computer science lecturer. In 1986, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo awarded Shaneyfelt its first bachelor of science in computer science. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo business major <strong>Althea <span aria-label=\"Kamalii\">Kamali&#699;i<\/span><\/strong> is also on the platform\u2019s development team.<\/p>\n<p>Student Corner saved the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiiacademyofscience.org\/science-fair\">2020 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Science and Engineering Fair<\/a> by enabling submissions from more than 400 participants to go virtual on its platform.
