Online instruction commences on March 23.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty have been diving in and working hard to shift to the new paradigm. <abbr>UHOIC<\/abbr> has been providing a range of resources to help faculty transition, including a checklist with resources, online mini-lessons, online office hours, and one to one consultation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/give\/giving-opportunity\/covid-19\">Support the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Student Relief fund and COVID-19 research<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Associate Vice President for Students and Director of Academic Technology Services Hae Okimoto said about a third of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty statewide were already utilizing distance education methods before the current health crisis, although the rates varied across the 10 campuses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/system-online-education-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Person at a computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-114139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/system-online-education-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/system-online-education-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/system-online-education-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/system-online-education.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What is really impressive to me are faculty who have used technology before saying, &lsquo;Hey, I\u02bbll help. Do you want me to help my peers and my colleagues?&rsquo;&rdquo; Okimoto said.<\/p>\n<p>Systemwide collaboration has been key. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Education&#8217;s Technology and Distance Programs shared their resources and expertise. Leeward Community College instructional designers collaborated to develop a remote instruction template. Instructional designers on all campuses have been collaborating in teaching online lessons and support for their faculty.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s instructional design programs are nationally recognized. The <abbr>UHOIC<\/abbr> received the Effective Practice Award for Innovate 2020 from the International Online Learning Consortium.<\/p>\n<h2>National leader <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p>Laudable work was already being done at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohana.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/topp\/\">Teaching Online Preparation Program<\/a> (<abbr>TOPP<\/abbr>) has received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/31\/kapiolani-topp-honor-2020\/\">two national awards over the last year<\/a>. The <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Distance Education Team is also this year&#8217;s <abbr>UH<\/abbr> nominee for the Governor&#8217;s Award for Team Excellence Award of Merit. Instructional Designer and <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> team member Jamie Sickel said the <abbr>TOPP<\/abbr> program has already graduated 93 faculty members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;(Faculty) have proven to be an amazing resource during this time of uncertainty,&rdquo; Sickel said.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> distance education team quickly put out a call for volunteers, arranged spaces (both physical and virtual), and communicated to the campus that they were all-hands-on-deck to support their colleagues in the shift to remote learning. Volunteers answering that call contributed copious resources, necessitating the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/kapiolani.padlet.org\/celtt1\/xqk51yiqvyij\">a public bulletin board via Padlet<\/a> just to give them an outlet to share.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&ldquo;&#8230;it is heartwarming to see our faculty, instructional designers and staff pulling together, working long hours, to insure the best education so that our students can complete this semester.&rdquo; &#8212;Hae Okimoto<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The campus is also offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/coronavirus-covid-19-staff-and-faculty-info\/\">Teaching and Learning Contingency<\/a> support sessions, either via Zoom or face-to-face. Online faculty have assisted in the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/14DF-FpcfP6aQvVON2A5p3meOlB5IfVZH1guUaOMFsug\/edit\">campus faculty<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1c8xubv2w95pvHtMhA9hA1sXHVg-yIDTkR59j_NsLn-E\/edit\">counselor\/support staff<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1mBWS3rUUjlTDpPUlaiASn7bHRKxm3cOtn7p3KA9HkMs\/edit\">student resources<\/a> and have volunteered their contact information to be circulated as a list of mentors\/helpers for less experienced colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>Sickel said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> faculty have been &ldquo;amazing.&rdquo; Lecturers who are not currently teaching this semester but had previously taught hybrid and online courses have jumped in to help.
