Students enjoyed having the opportunity to personally thank the generous people who have invested in their success, and donors were delighted to meet the people whose futures they are impacting.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Vice President of Advancement and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> <strong>Tim Dolan<\/strong> said, &ldquo;Scholarship assistance does so much in addition to helping meet critical financial needs. Scholarships say, &lsquo;I want you to succeed and I believe in you.&rsquo; There is no greater gift.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In 1976, the first permanently endowed scholarship was created at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation to benefit students attending <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.  Since then, providing access to higher education through private gifts has become a tradition. Today, the foundation manages more than 2,000 student aid accounts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_113377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113377\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/uh-foundation-scholarship-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"scholarship celebration 2020\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-113377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/uh-foundation-scholarship-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/uh-foundation-scholarship-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/uh-foundation-scholarship-4-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/uh-foundation-scholarship-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-113377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The celebration was held at Stan Sheriff Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last year, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation distributed more than $11.6 million in student aid to 3,863 students statewide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/publications\/annual-report-2019\">Read the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation&#8217;s 2019 Annual Report<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Philanthropic scholarships help us keep more local students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> so they can pursue their studies at home and engage in our local communities to work as our teachers, healthcare providers, engineers and in every essential sector in our state,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;By alleviating some of the financial burden of higher education, these awards help our students graduate on time with the knowledge, skills and ability they need to advance their families and fulfill their dreams.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Scholarship recipient, proud <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumna and respected child welfare social worker <strong>Yolanda Domingo<\/strong> moved attendees when she shared how scholarships changed her life and helped her rise above life\u2019s challenges. Domingo\u2019s challenges included raising her family while fighting cancer and receiving a heart transplant. Yolanda earned her liberal arts degree from Leeward Community College, her bachelor\u2019s degree in social sciences from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, and her master of social work from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, all with the help of multiple scholarships.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation Senior Executive Director of Scholarship Development <strong>Malia Peters<\/strong> said, &ldquo;Our donors and students are the heartbeat of our scholarship program.
