For the fifth straight year, University of Â鶹´«Ã½ at Hilo student-athletes and local keiki enjoyed the readings of the late Dr. Seuss together on Read Across America Day, an annual celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2.

The Vulcan teams visited nearly 2,700 elementary students from Haʻaheo, Keaʻau, Keaukaha, Waiākea, Kaʻūmana and Hilo Union. Vulcan teams that participated include the women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf and baseball. Due to a doubleheader on the same day, the softball team could not be involved in the reading event.

“Thank you to our student-athletes and coaches for their continued support of our local keiki and schools,” said UH Hilo Athletic Director Patrick Guillen. “I am happy to say this annually that this is one of my favorite days of the year. This has grown from reading to 1,800 children in our first year doing this in 2016 to almost 2,700 last year. It’s a big part of who we are in reaching out and connecting with our local youth and the community.”
