(Photo credit: <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When humans go back to the Moon&#8212;and <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> plans to return by 2024&#8212;they will need water. For now, astronauts expect to bring their own. But future space explorers aim to take advantage of the water stored as ice, discovered at the Moon\u2019s poles in shadowed regions.<\/p>\n<p>A new team including researchers from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) will investigate the origins and evolution of water and other volatiles on the Moon\u2019s surface. The group is one of <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>\u2019s eight new <a href=\"https:\/\/sservi.nasa.gov\/\">Solar System Exploration Research Virtual Institutes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112347\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-soest-hope-ishii-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hope Ishii\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-112347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-soest-hope-ishii-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-soest-hope-ishii-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-soest-hope-ishii.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hope Ishii<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> will receive a $2.7-million grant to be dispersed over five years with the investigation being led by <strong>Hope Ishii<\/strong>, research professor at <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a>. Other members of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team are <strong>Paul Lucey<\/strong>, <strong>John Bradley<\/strong>, <strong>Shuai Li<\/strong>, <strong>Tayro Acosta-Maeda<\/strong> and <strong>Barbara Bruno<\/strong> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, and <strong>Heather Kaluna<\/strong> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, including several graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The Interdisciplinary Consortium for Evaluating Volatile Origins (<abbr>ICE Five-O<\/abbr>) grant will allow researchers to study the effects of interactions between lunar soil and simulants with volatiles at nanometer-length scales in the transmission electron microscope at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/AEMC\/\">Advanced Electron Microscopy Center<\/a>&#8212;while controlling the temperature from the cryogenic conditions in permanently-shadowed regions to the warmer temperatures of sunlit regions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Revealing the source of the Moon\u2019s water can, in turn, inform us about how the Earth got its water,&rdquo; said Jeffrey Gillis-Davis, research associate professor of physics at Washington University in St. Louis and principal investigator of the <abbr>ICE Five-O<\/abbr> team. &ldquo;If we see that the water wasn\u2019t sourced entirely from lunar volcanoes&#8212;that it was delivered later\u2014then it would be a strong indicator that Earth\u2019s oceans formed at least in part by water delivered after Earth\u2019s formation, rather than during its accretion in the early solar system.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This will allow researchers to study the effects of space weathering in the harsh environment.
