The healthcare product company is creating the &ldquo;Stress Less Vest,&rdquo; a stress\/anxiety-reducing garment that can be worn inconspicuously under normal clothing in everyday situations. Manaola Innovations and two other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> startups were awarded a total of $40,000 in grant funding by <a href=\"http:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a>\u2019s (<abbr>PACE<\/abbr>) new Liftoff Advisors program to help create their new products.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are currently executing the process of putting this product on the market so the grant will go towards paying for manufacturing, the pre-ordering process and marketing\/promotional materials,&rdquo; said Yoshino, who was inspired to create innovative medical devices by his brother who has cerebral palsy and his late grandparents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111953\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111953\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-business-kareem-elassy-300x169.png\" alt=\"Kareem Elassy presents using monitor\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-111953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-business-kareem-elassy-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-business-kareem-elassy-130x73.png 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-business-kareem-elassy-630x353.png 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-business-kareem-elassy.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elassy leads <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Innovation Lab.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The second awardee, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Innovation Lab, is led by <strong>Kareem Elassy<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ee.hawaii.edu\/\">electrical engineering<\/a> PhD student. Two other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa grads are also on the team. The company is working to create &ldquo;GallOptics,&rdquo; a technique to make lightweight, deformable mirrors.<\/p>\n<p>Student Corner is the third awardee. The multi-discipline team of <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> students is focused on creating a web-based platform for student work.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Advisors and mentors<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The three student-led companies were selected in October 2019 based on their potential and commitment to the new venture. Each company was matched with a board of advisors who mentored the founders for several months. Founders established business development milestones and reported their progress at monthly meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The mentors advised the founders at each meeting by providing feedback, recommending different markets to explore and asking the teams to consider different strategies to reach their business goals. The advisors made the final grant award decisions based on the progress each company made and their ability to achieve their milestones during the program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re fortunate to have the support of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of the <abbr>VP<\/abbr> for Research and Innovation that allows us to offer this program.
