Six Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College<\/a> students participated in the Emerging Researchers National (ERN<\/abbr>) Conference in STEM<\/abbr><\/a> held in Washington D.C.<\/abbr>, February 7–8, and three received awards for their research projects.<\/p>\n

Undergraduate research experience (URE<\/abbr>) students Jennifer Chinen<\/strong>, Sheri Lei Marzan<\/strong>, Brent Shigano<\/strong>, Kiyomi Sanders<\/strong>, Alden Fernandez<\/strong> and Keanu Rochette Yu-Tsuen<\/strong> competed with four-year university students from across the country and presented their research in engineering, physics, ecology and environmental and earth sciences.<\/p>\n

The conference is aimed at college and university undergraduate and graduate students who participate in programs funded by the NSF HRD<\/abbr> unit, including underrepresented minorities and persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n

Research award winners<\/h2>\n

Keanu Rochette Yu-Tsuen<\/strong> was awarded for, “Sensitive of Porites Compressa Corals to Native Hawaiian Plant Scaevola Taccada Extract.” He received third place in the Ecology, Environmental and Earth Sciences category.<\/p>\n

Jennifer Chinen<\/strong> was awarded for, “Creating a Noise-Cancelling System to Reduce Whale Beaching Events Caused by Ship Noise.” She received first place in the Engineering category.<\/p>\n

Kiyomi Sanders<\/strong> received first place in the Physics category for “Verifying the Eccentricity of the Moon\u2019s Orbit using Lagrangian.”<\/p>\n

Mahalo to faculty advisors and mentors John Berestecky<\/strong>, Hervé Collin<\/strong>, Aaron Hanai<\/strong> and Assistant Professor Mike Ross<\/strong>. The accomplishments of the students at the national level, the quality and rigor of their research and the professionalism of their presentations, continue to bring pride and recognition to Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr>, the URE<\/abbr> program, the UH<\/abbr> System and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n
