After months in the nursery at the university’s aquaculture center, the young oysters are now believed to be large and hardy enough to survive the heavily sedimented waters of Māʻalaea Harbor. The oysters will live in cages below the water surface and away from boat traffic. They were raised triploids, meaning they are sterile and likely unable to reproduce.

For the full story, visit the UH Hilo Stories website.

UH Hilo center grows oysters and the aquaculture workforce

The UH Hilo aquaculture center assisted in raising oysters, nature’s most efficient water filters, to restore native oysters and improve clarity in Â鶹´«Ã½ waters.

[30
1246,267,14,907
post-110906","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-aquaculture","tag-pacific-aquaculture-and-coastal-resources-center","tag-uh-hilo","tag-uh-hilo-stories","entry","has-media
["GET
