Honolulu Star-Bulletin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa Library<\/a> received $265,018 from the National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> to digitize and upload the predecessor newspapers of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/em> on the Chronicling America website<\/a>. The publications being digitized are the Pacific Commercial Advertiser<\/em> (1856-1921) and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin<\/em> (1917-1922).<\/p>\n

Continuing into the third phase of the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Digital Newspaper Project, the library will digitize about 100,000 English-language newspaper pages in the next two years.<\/p>\n

On the freely accessible Chronicling America website, users can browse and search digitized American newspapers and read essays about them. In a 20-year period, the National Digital Newspaper Program<\/a> will digitize historically significant newspapers from all U.S. states and territories published between 1836 and 1922.<\/p>\n

The National Digital Newspaper Program is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress<\/a>. The former provides funding for the program, and the latter will permanently maintain the website.<\/p>\n

The National Endowment for the Humanities had previously awarded $610,920 to the UH<\/abbr> Mānoa Library to digitize more than 200,000 pages from 13 Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> newspaper titles between 1836 and 1922.<\/p>\n
