Professor <strong>Harald Barkhoff<\/strong> traveled to the <abbr>AKA<\/abbr> Leadership Conference in Tampa, Florida to receive the award on behalf of his department.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/americankinesiology.org\/SubPages\/Pages\/AKA%20Inclusive%20Excellence%20Award\"><abbr>AKA<\/abbr> Inclusive Excellence Award<\/a> recognizes academic programs that exemplify the core principles of inclusive excellence and diversity. The award honors the department\u2019s commitment to inclusiveness through its recruitment, retention, hiring, curriculum development and administrative structure.<\/p>\n<p>The award also &ldquo;recognizes and celebrates the diverse student make-up of our <abbr>KES<\/abbr> program,&rdquo; says Barkhoff. &ldquo;Eighty-four percent of our students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds, of which 35 percent are Native Hawaiians.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s kinesiology and exercise sciences department was nominated for the award by <strong>Jennifer Stotter<\/strong>, director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Office of Equal Employment and Affirmative Action.
