  {"id":110012,"date":"2020-01-23T09:06:09","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T19:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=110012"},"modified":"2021-03-31T16:25:55","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T02:25:55","slug":"turnout-overwhelms-organizers-olelo-hawaii-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/23\/turnout-overwhelms-organizers-olelo-hawaii-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Turnout overwhelms organizers of free \u02bbOlelo Hawai\u02bbi class"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/olelo_Hawaii_class_Manoa_ballroom.jpg\" alt=\"olelo Hawaii class\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-110010\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/olelo_Hawaii_class_Manoa_ballroom.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/olelo_Hawaii_class_Manoa_ballroom-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/olelo_Hawaii_class_Manoa_ballroom-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The turnout for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/10\/asuh-olelo-hawaii-classes\/\">a free Hawaiian language class<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> campus was so large that organizers needed to change the venue from a Campus Center conference room to the Ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>More than 200 people showed up Wednesday, January 22, for the first of 15 free weekly, non-credit <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> classes hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/asuhmanoa.wixsite.com\/asuh\">Associated Students of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> (<abbr>ASUH<\/abbr>), the undergraduate student government at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paige Okamura<\/strong> and <strong>Akea Kahikina<\/strong> are graduate students, fluent <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> speakers and instructors for the classes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I really wanted to cry. That overwhelming physical presence of people almost shows more what they value here than what I could write down,&rdquo; Okamura said.<\/p>\n<p>The course is offered in partnership with <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge. <abbr>ASUH<\/abbr> Sen. Raiyan Rafid introduced the bill, which appropriated funds for the <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> classes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I did think that people were going to show interest because there is a need,&rdquo; Rafid said. &ldquo;When I was talking to people, everyone was supportive of this vision that I had, and it wasn\u2019t to this capacity. But, I\u2019m glad people showed up.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Instructors taught basic conversational phrases and had participants practice with one another. The class is free of charge to all <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members. No registration is required.<\/p>\n<p>Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 3&#8211;4 p.m. The Campus Center Ballroom is the location until further notice, according to <abbr>ASUH<\/abbr>.
