  {"id":109844,"date":"2020-01-21T11:06:54","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T21:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=109844"},"modified":"2021-09-03T15:54:51","modified_gmt":"2021-09-04T01:54:51","slug":"indigenous-constitutions-polynesian-independence-symposium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/21\/indigenous-constitutions-polynesian-independence-symposium\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous constitutions and Polynesian independence focus of symposium"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/manoa-hshk-polynesia-map.jpg\" alt=\"Map of Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-109853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/manoa-hshk-polynesia-map.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/manoa-hshk-polynesia-map-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/manoa-hshk-polynesia-map-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Gladys Kamakak\u016bokalani &#699;Ainoa Brandt Endowed Chair for Comparative Polynesian Studies is hosting three mini-symposiums on indigenous constitutions and United Nations (<abbr>UN<\/abbr>) paths to independence the week of January 20.<\/p>\n<p>The symposiums <em><span aria-label=\"Onipaa\">&#699;Onipa&#699;a<\/span>: Polynesian Strategies on Political Self-Determination on M\u0101ori Constitutions<\/em> and <em>Tahitian efforts for Independence through the <abbr>UN<\/abbr> Committee for Decolonization of French Polynesia<\/em> feature some of the leaders in Polynesian independence.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When we look at all of the issues Hawaiians are protesting and trying to protect&#8212;Maunakea, Kahuku, Waim\u0101nalo, Maui Water Rights and all of the other land and water issues that are dear to Hawaiian hearts&#8212;we often consider what would happen if we had a government of our own that governed our own lands,&rdquo; said Brandt Chair <strong>Lilikala <span aria-label=\"Kameeleihiwa\">Kame&#699;eleihiwa<\/span><\/strong>, a professor at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/\">Kamakak\u016bokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a>, in an article she wrote for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs about the symposiums. &ldquo;Such a govern\u00adment would require Constitution and even, perhaps, independence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The speakers include Moana Jackson, founder of Maori Legal Ser\u00advices in New Zealand, who wrote the first draft of the <abbr>UN<\/abbr> Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; Auckland University Professor Margaret Mutu who has fought many land struggles and Sen. <span aria-label=\"Ariihau\">Ari&#699;ihau<\/span> Tiiheiava of Tahiti and the Tahitian Inde\u00adpendence Party, who will report on his work with the <abbr>UN<\/abbr> Com\u00admittee on Decolonization of French Polynesia. <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> participants include <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> Dean <strong>Jon Osorio<\/strong> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian Studies Associate Professor <strong>Kamana Beamer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The symposiums are Wednesday, January 22 at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Kamakak\u016biokalani Center for Hawai\u00adian Studies; Thursday, January 23 at <span aria-label=\"Kaiwakiloumoku\">Ka&#699;iwakiloumoku<\/span> on the Kamehemaha Schools Kap&#257;lama campus; and Friday, January 24 at Hale <span aria-label=\"Ao\">A&#699;o<\/span> at Windward Community College. The lifelong Hawaiian educator was the first female principal in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> when it was still a U.S. Territory before serving as a principal at Kamehameha Schools, regent and chair of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents and trustee at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. She also co-authored the essay <em>Broken Trust<\/em> that led to the reorganization Bishop Estate, which is now Kamehameha Schools.
