So whether we&#8217;re an archaeologist, or whether we&#8217;re an educator, or whether we&#8217;re a developer of a mass transit system, we are meeting each other across those lines to see each other&#8217;s excellence.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The day began with guests being greeted with ti leaf lei provided by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Aloha <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> Student Service Club and the singing of &ldquo;Mele Honouliuli&rdquo; by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Those of us who gathered here, gathered here because we love the land,&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> resident kupuna Aunty <strong>Lynette Kaopuiki Paglinawan<\/strong> said in her welcome remarks.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor <strong>Maenette Benham<\/strong> welcomed attendees and shared a cherished memory of spending time as a little girl with her grandfather, a fisherman, in <span aria-label=\"Kaaawa\">Ka&#699;a&#699;awa<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have to remember that today, as you go through all of your different panels, presentations and conversations, is that feeling&#8212;that kanaka <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> connection of feeling the embrace of this place that is part of all our <abbr title=\"deoxyribonucleic acid\">DNA<\/abbr>&#8212;is so very important to all of us&#8230;to the many generations to come,&rdquo; Benham said.<\/p>\n<h2>Rail update<\/h2>\n<p>Among the first guest speakers was Andrew Robbins, <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of <abbr title=\"Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation\">HART<\/abbr>, who provided an update on the rail project.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;(We are) going to be connecting most of the major campuses across the island, right here with our <span aria-label=\"Keoneae\">Keone&#699;ae<\/span> Station that you can see off in the distance, (including) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> (and eventually) <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a>,&rdquo; Robbins shared. &ldquo;So just think about that: students, faculty can transfer very quickly and seamlessly between campuses.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing mobility with the rail, &ldquo;we also hope to contribute to telling the story of the host culture here,&rdquo; Robbins emphasized, highlighting features such as Hawaiian station names and interpretive signage at every station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/ekamakanihou\/?p=11535\">For more details, visit <em>E Kamakani Hou<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Zenaida Serrano Arvman<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The community gathered together to network and share in the awareness of how the land loved us first and how we can love the land in return.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[62,65,9,59],"class_list":["post-109250","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","tag-honolulu-community-college","tag-leeward-community-college","tag-uh-manoa","tag-uh-west-oahu","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/109250","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=109250"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/109250\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":109284,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/109250\/revisions\/109284"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=109250"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=109250"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=109250"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
