There were health screenings, exhibits and demonstrations, from wheelchair racing to <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> training to tests that determine your fitness age. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We had to do a vertical jump and we tested how high we can jump,&rdquo; said Kahuku High School student Jahya Costa. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We learned how to do <abbr>CPR<\/abbr> and how to hold your palm correctly,&rdquo; said Angelo Ruiz, a sophomore at Mililani High School. &ldquo;And how to do 30 compressions every time until you get a response.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>EMT<\/abbr> (emergency medical technician) or <abbr>EMS<\/abbr> (emergency medical specialist) in general is mainly to help the community,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> student <strong>Zachary Suniga<\/strong>, who is studying to become an <abbr>EMT<\/abbr>. &ldquo;So by us teaching them how to help one another, we might save another life.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> has long been known for it&#8217;s accredited health academic programs, offering degrees and certificates in a variety of subjects including emergency medical services, exercise and sports science, pharmacy technician, radiolog technology, medical laboratory technician and nursing. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s time for us to show these programs and the skills that these students do and the workforce that they then end up working for the state,&rdquo; said <strong>Patricia O&#8217;Hagan<\/strong>, the dean of health academic programs at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>The fair gave the high school students an opportunity to engage with the college students while learning more about potential careers and what the college has to offer. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A lot of them are interested in the medical field or something health related so it is good to talk to them about this,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> nursing student <strong>Rowen Gargas<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Trying to sell our program to any student who wants to come,&rdquo; said <b>Iokepa Alcantra<\/b>, who is studying exercise and sports science at the college. &ldquo;And it&#8217;s open, it&#8217;s very enjoyable.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s really nice and informational and we get to know what programs are available,&rdquo; said Ruiz. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I want to go into physical therapy, so it helps a lot,&rdquo; said Costa.<\/p>\n<p>But the top priority of the fair is to get the high school students who attended to think about their own health and wellness. <\/p>\n<p>The message is simple. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just a healthy lifestyle, period,&rdquo; said Alcantra. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College&#8217;s health academic program holds first ever Health-E Fair.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[25,12],"tags":[165,63,71,56,603],"class_list":["post-10918","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-academic-news","category-video","tag-health","tag-kapiolani-community-college","tag-uh-community-colleges","tag-video-2","tag-workforce-development","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10918","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=10918"}],"version-history":[{"count":16,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10918\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":135452,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/10918\/revisions\/135452"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=10918"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=10918"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=10918"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
