Rhode Award from the national Association of American Law Schools (<abbr>AALS<\/abbr>) at its annual convention in Washington, <abbr title=\"District of Columbia\">D.C.<\/abbr> on January 4, 2020. Founded in 1900, the <abbr>AALS<\/abbr> is the non-profit organization of 179 <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> law schools that graduate the vast majority of the nation\u2019s lawyers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108333\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/manoa-law-soifer-avi-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Avi Soifer\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/manoa-law-soifer-avi-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/manoa-law-soifer-avi-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/manoa-law-soifer-avi.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avi Soifer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The national honor recognizes Soifer\u2019s work on behalf of people in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> who have benefited from many thousands of hours of free assistance, provided by the students and faculty at the <a href=\"http:\/\/law.hawaii.edu\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>. It also responds to over a dozen initiatives during his deanship that serve those in need, including those among the most vulnerable in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Soifer said that he was very grateful for the honor, yet he pointed out that the recognition really ought to be to the entire Richardson Law School&#8212;students, faculty, and alumni&#8212;for their ongoing support for free legal assistance to those most in need. He added that, for example, the law school was unique in its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/pro-bono-program\"><em>pro bono<\/em> requirement<\/a> for graduation of at least 60 hours (a graduation requirement first advocated by students), and most Richardson students far exceed that number.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My work has been our work at our law school,&rdquo; Soifer said. &ldquo;Working together we have accomplished a great deal with our legal community allies to increase access to justice in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. At heart this is what the William S. Richardson School of Law is all about&#8212;reaching out together to help others.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In nominating Dean Soifer, Martha Minow, former dean of Harvard Law School and vice-chair of the Legal Services Corporation, cited a wide range of initiatives launched by the dean to build capacity in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s social justice safety net, calling him &ldquo;a leader in legal education and exemplary participant in state and national social justice efforts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Under Soifer\u2019s tenure at Richardson, projects from existing law clinics to the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiiinnocenceproject.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Innocence Project<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/kahuliao\">Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/mlpc\">Medical-Legal Partnership<\/a>, the Law and Justice Institute, and many others have all flourished.
