  {"id":108277,"date":"2019-12-23T08:54:19","date_gmt":"2019-12-23T18:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=108277"},"modified":"2020-03-02T16:41:55","modified_gmt":"2020-03-03T02:41:55","slug":"conservation-innovation-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/12\/23\/conservation-innovation-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> receives $900<abbr title=\"thousand\">K<\/abbr> conservation innovation grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/water_drop_generic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-108282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/water_drop_generic.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/water_drop_generic-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/water_drop_generic-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A team at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa has been awarded a $900,000 grant by the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Agriculture (<abbr title=\"U.S. Department of Agriculture\">USDA<\/abbr>)\u2019s Natural Resources Conservation Service through a program that supports the conservation of private lands through funding projects centered on technology and innovation.  <\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr>\u2019s project, Forecasting daily reference evapotranspiration and rainfall for water resources conservation and sustainable agriculture, is led by principal investigators <strong>Sayed Bateni<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Water Resources Research Center<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Water Resources Research Center\">WRRC<\/abbr>), <strong>Jonathan Deenik<\/strong> and <strong>Jensen Uyeda<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> and <strong>Aly El-Kadi<\/strong> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> and <abbr>WRRC<\/abbr>.  <\/p>\n<p>The team aims to demonstrate how farmers can conserve water and be more effective in utilizing water resources by implementing an innovative new method to model and forecast daily rainfall and evaporation in irrigation areas. The approach centers on use of an artificial neural network that breaks down complex long-term time-series into simpler units, providing more accurate forecasting. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>USDA<\/abbr>\u2019s Conservation Innovation Grants program awarded a total of $12.5 million in 2019 to 19 different projects addressing areas including water quantity, urban agriculture, pollinator habitat and accelerating the pace and scale of conservation adoption.
