This is the first time a <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a> production has been selected to perform in the Big Apple. The invite is a major accolade.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It definitely will put us on a national map as the entity as the university to come to, to study indigenous theater,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/hawaiian-theatre\/\">Hawaiian Theatre Program<\/a> Associate Professor <strong><span aria-label=\"Hailiopua\">Haili&#699;&#333;pua<\/span> Baker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Kumu (teacher) Baker is the playwright and director of the hana keaka (Hawaiian theatre) play, which is performed predominantly in the Hawaiian language with bi-lingual segments.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers launching the inaugural Reflections of Native Voices Native Theater Festival in <abbr title=\"New York City\">NYC<\/abbr> invited the cast to perform &ldquo;Off Broadway&rdquo; in January.<\/p>\n<h2>Help bring Hawaiian culture to the New York stage<\/h2>\n<p>Taking the production to the East Coast comes with its challenges. While researching a project for class, they embark on a journey that takes them into the repository of 19th century Hawaiian language archival materials. Hawaiian <span aria-label=\"oli\">&#699;oli<\/span> (chant), mele (songs) and hula transport audiences through time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#256;kea Kahikina<\/strong> plays one of the production\u2019s main characters. The 26 year old is double majoring in Hawaiian Theatre and <span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s master&#8217;s program. Before attending the university, Kahikina auditioned for roles on mega Broadway productions such as <em>Hamilton<\/em> and <em>Aladdin<\/em>. He\u2019s thrilled to be returning to the big city.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s the mecca of theater&#8212;where people have not heard pidgin before, not heard <span aria-label=\"Olelo\">&#699;&#332;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> before. They get to actually hear that and see a whole other perspective that fights against just coconut trees and pineapples,&rdquo; Kahikina said.<\/p>\n<p>The production is scheduled to be the opening act of the six-day indigenous festival. <em><span aria-label=\"Aua\">&#699;Au&#699;a<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Ia\">&#699;Ia<\/span><\/em> will also take the stage at one of New York\u2019s leading Off-Broadway venues.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The opportunity to legitimize our <span aria-label=\"moolelo\">mo&#699;olelo<\/span> on that type of platform to say that our stories are ku like a like.
