  {"id":107576,"date":"2019-12-10T09:40:38","date_gmt":"2019-12-10T19:40:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=107576"},"modified":"2020-01-13T14:15:10","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T00:15:10","slug":"education-to-workforce-report-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/12\/10\/education-to-workforce-report-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"More high school grads aiming for teaching careers"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-p-20-classroom.jpg\" alt=\"Students in a classroom with a teacher\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-107618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-p-20-classroom.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-p-20-classroom-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-p-20-classroom-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P-20 <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiidxp.org\/files\/Rpt_Education_to_Workforce-EDU_2019-12.pdf\"><em>Education to Workforce Report<\/em><\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>) shows the number of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education (<abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>) students completing a Career and Technical Education (<abbr>CTE<\/abbr>) program of study in education prior to college is increasing.<\/p>\n<p>Key report highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> graduates who completed an education <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> program of study had higher college enrollment rates compared to statewide average (61 percent vs. 55 percent)<\/li>\n<li><abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> education graduates were more likely to still be enrolled at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> at the end of the second year compared to non-<abbr>CTE<\/abbr> graduates (78 percent vs. 62 percent)<\/li>\n<li>Education graduates are more likely to be found in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s workforce five years after graduating from <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, compared to graduates earning a non-education degree. Moreover, a large percentage of those education graduates found in the state&#8217;s workforce were working in the education industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The latest findings also reflect the number of <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> graduates pursuing education career pathways, as well as education graduates from <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, is still not sufficient to meet the high demand for teachers needed to fill vacancies across the state. Several statewide initiatives, such as &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/06\/be-a-hero-be-a-teacher-campaign\/\">Be a Hero.
