The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa team is gaining recognition in the largest collegiate league.<\/p>\n<p>Leading the charge in the arena of esports at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is <strong>Nyle Sky Kauweloa<\/strong>, a graduate assistant at the <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> in the <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>. Kauweloa, along with <strong>Kevin Nguyen<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa communications graduate, who now works full time as <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s esports program assistant. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> esports runs 5 teams across 2 games which are <em>Overwatch<\/em> and <em>League<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> collegiate esports team, which is competing in the 2019 <em>League of Legends<\/em> Collegiate Starleague (<abbr>CSL<\/abbr>) tournament, recently received honorable mention in the <abbr>CSL<\/abbr> rankings and was <a href=\"https:\/\/cstarleague.com\/lol\/news_articles\/1069?fbclid=IwAR2F6lkitmznHJ2WEnsBZs_NxwgzLQAXyotZ5ZnofJr-I0oPCJJBf-Oc7Mc\">noted as one of four teams in the Southwest region that remains undefeated after three weeks of regular season play<\/a>. The other teams are from the University of California, Irvine (<abbr title=\"University of California Irvine\">UCI<\/abbr>), University of New Mexico and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/04\/14\/esports-as-a-career\/\">Learn more about the growth of esports at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s really amazing given that this is our first time competing\u2014ever in an organized tournament, and we are mentioned along with <abbr>UCI<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Kauweloa.<\/p>\n<p>Kauweloa also teaches a course, Esports and Society, the first of its kind at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.  The course covers the rising popularity and significance of the growing esports industry.<\/p>\n<p>The University of New Mexico and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> will go head-to-head on January 18, 2020, competing in the next round of the tournament.
