{"id":10623,"date":"2012-10-10T11:39:20","date_gmt":"2012-10-10T21:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=10623"},"modified":"2021-02-17T13:29:46","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T23:29:46","slug":"maui-colleges-new-program-preserves-future-of-hawaiian-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/10\/10\/maui-colleges-new-program-preserves-future-of-hawaiian-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Maui College&#8217;s new program preserves future of Hawaiian music"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zM6RgQG6_Rw?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The first ever class of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maui.hawaii.edu\/ihm\/\">Institute for Hawaiian Music<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Maui College is a talented group says institute director <strong>George Kahumoku, Jr.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is the cream of the crop of Hawaiian music,&rdquo; said four-time Grammy Award winner Kahumoku. He is considered by many to be a living legend when it comes to Hawaiian music. <\/p>\n<p>There are about a dozen students in the program, which is dedicated to the perpetuation and preservation of Hawaiian music. Students have to go through a very competitive application and interview process before they are accepted into the 18-month program.<\/p>\n<p>Institute for Hawaiian Music students are mentored by some of the greatest Hawaiian musicians around.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If they want to learn falsetto, we hook them up with Uncle Richard <span aria-label=\"Hoopii\">Ho&#699;opi&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Kahumoku. &ldquo;If they want to learn slack key, Uncle Ledward <span aria-label=\"Kapana\">K&#699;apana<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;ukulele<\/span>, Herb Ohta. That kind of thing.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I always love their music. I get to meet all these guys and they get to teach me and it&#8217;s like, sometimes I have to think about and wow, is this really happening?&rdquo; said <strong>Axel Menezes<\/strong>, a student participating in the program. <\/p>\n<p>Students take a variety of music classes, a music business course and perhaps, most importantly of all, Hawaiian language classes. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Hawaiian music is not just the music itself,&rdquo; said student <strong>Travis Orozco<\/strong>. &ldquo;It&#8217;s the culture, it&#8217;s the people, it&#8217;s the land and everything. Just learning all these bits and pieces, piecing it all together is awesome.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The students also perform on a regular basis at actual paid gigs and have to produce their own <abbr>CD<\/abbr> for commercial release before getting their certificate of completion.
