The study, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/oby.22637\">Children and Adolescent\u2019s Anthropometrics Body Composition from <abbr>3D<\/abbr> Optical Surface Scans<\/a>,&rdquo; was featured in the November 2019 issue and presented at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medpagetoday.com\/meetingcoverage\/obesityweek\">Obesity Week 2019<\/a> in Las Vegas, Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Childhood obesity rates in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> have been steadily increasing over the last couple of decades, as it has been in states across the nation. Obesity is a risk factor for some cancers and metabolic syndrome. <abbr>3D<\/abbr> technology could be a crucial tool in identifying obesity early during childhood in order to prevent obesity and metabolic syndrome in adulthood,&rdquo; said Wong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106143\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-uhcc-michael-wong-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Michael Wong\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-106143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-uhcc-michael-wong-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-uhcc-michael-wong-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-uhcc-michael-wong.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michael Wong<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wong used <abbr>3D<\/abbr> optical technology, Fit <abbr>3D<\/abbr>, to make body composition equations for children and teenagers ages 5 to 17 years. The equations Wong created for <abbr>3D<\/abbr> optical scanners provide easy-to-use and accurate body composition models that can track body changes over time. The <abbr>3D<\/abbr> optical technology is not only safe to use on children, but also gives accurate health assessments.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Although there are many body composition measurement methods and tools, most are not easily accessible to the general public and require a technician or are not accurate. <abbr>3D<\/abbr> optical scanners are becoming more accessible, safe and can be self-operated,&rdquo; said Wong.<\/p>\n<p>The research from this study will be used to track changes in health over time, in order to reduce the prevalence of obesity and its effects.
