Four alumni and one student were recognized as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Complex Area Teachers of the Year, one alumni was named <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Teacher of the Year and another earned the state\u2019s Principal of the Year award.<\/p>\n<h2><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Complex Area and State Teacher of the Year awards<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cecilia &ldquo;<abbr>CC<\/abbr>&rdquo; Chung<\/strong> was honored with the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Teacher of the Year award and <strong>Celeste Endo<\/strong>, <strong>Kathy Sewake<\/strong>, <strong>Ululani Russo<\/strong>, <strong>Dustin Chang<\/strong> and <strong>Nikki Morishige<\/strong> were recognized as complex area teachers. Chung and Endo were recognized on Educator Appreciation Day at Aloha Stadium during the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"versus\">vs.<\/abbr> Fresno State football game on November 2.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so amazed by and proud of all of the Teachers of the Year,&rdquo; said <abbr>COE<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Nathan Murata<\/strong>. &ldquo;Their commitment to improving education in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, year after year, is inspiring.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>COE<\/abbr> alumni won for the following complexes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Endo: Kaimuk\u012b-McKinley-Roosevelt<\/li>\n<li>Sewake: Hilo-Wai\u0101kea<\/li>\n<li>Russo: <span aria-label=\"Nanakuli-Waianae\">N&#257;n&#257;kuli-Wai&#699;anae<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Chang: <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span>-Moanalua-Radford<\/li>\n<li>Morishige: Castle-Kahuku<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The awardees shared how their time at <abbr>COE<\/abbr> shaped them into the educators they are today.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The support that I received from my professors and peers throughout the elementary education and educational technology programs was amazing,&rdquo; said Sewake. &ldquo;In fact, I continue to learn from these incredible educators and friends today.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Chang agreed, saying, &ldquo;The professors were very encouraging and helpful, preparing us for what we needed to know and what to expect as future teachers. The classes allowed me to learn and make connections with professionals in the field of music, many of whom I turn to today for help and advice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Russo, who is a current doctoral student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/cs\/programs\/phd\/\">Department of Curriculum Studies<\/a> and <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Intermediate teacher, said, &ldquo;All of the graduate classes I have taken have helped my teaching career tremendously, as they focus on Hawaiian culture and place-based science. As a new <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> student, I am taking classes out[side] of my comfort [zone], and it\u2019s been opening my eyes to multiple perspectives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_106098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106098\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-education-awards-2.jpg\" alt=\"Fred Murphy\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-106098\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-education-awards-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-education-awards-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/manoa-education-awards-2-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-106098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred Murphy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Principal of the Year<\/h2>\n<p>Mililani High School Principal <strong>Fred Murphy<\/strong> was named the state\u2019s National Distinguished Principal of the Year by the Hawaii Association of Secondary School Administrators. Murphy was recognized locally during an event at the Hale Koa Hotel and nationally at the National Association of Secondary School Principals National Principal of the Year Institute in Washington <abbr>D.C.<\/abbr> where he joined the 49 other state awardees.<\/p>\n<p>National Distinguished Principal awardees are selected based on leadership skills, student learning, school demographics, professional preparation and education and recommendations from students, teachers, staff and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education leaders.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The College of Education at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> was truly impactful in my development as an educator, and later, educational officer,&rdquo; said Murphy. &ldquo;I have vivid memories of the caring and knowledgeable professors who truly knew what was going on in our public schools and I felt well-prepped to enter the <abbr>DOE<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Seven years ago, Murphy became principal of Mililani High School, his alma mater.
