And I was just so captivated by everything that my professor, <strong>James Mak<\/strong>, talked about,&rdquo; she recalls. &ldquo;He was wonderful and I felt every day like I was sitting on the edge of my seat; I was just so engaged.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And I saw how economics could use the math that I loved, so it had the reasoning and the elegance of math and logic, but it also had applications to important real-world questions. I knew almost immediately that that\u2019s what I was going to do.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Emerson praised <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty for their support and encouragement, including emeriti professors Mak, <strong>Sumner La Croix<\/strong> and <strong>Carl Bonham<\/strong>, economics professor and director of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Economic Research Organization. <\/p>\n<h2>More about Tisha Nakao Emerson<\/h2>\n<p>Born on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, the 1989 graduate of Konawaena High School was awarded the Regents Scholarship and enrolled at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, earning her <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in economics, with distinction, in 1993. She later earned a master\u2019s and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in economics from <abbr title=\"University of Southern California\">USC<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>She is currently the holder of the Ben H.
