(Photo credit: U.S. Coast Guard, Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew West\/Released)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/\"><abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Coast Guard<\/a> signed a memorandum of agreement with the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> in July as part of the Coast Guard&#8217;s Minority-Serving Institutions Partnership Program for increased student opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This agreement reflects a new chapter in the strong bond between the Coast Guard and University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Rear <abbr title=\"Admiral\">Adm.<\/abbr> Kevin Lunday, commander Coast Guard 14th District.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are honored to be a part of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> and look forward to greater engagement with students and faculty. Working together, we offer students and faculty an opportunity to learn about the Coast Guard and our important work in the Blue Pacific, and the Coast Guard seeks to strengthen our diverse and inclusive workforce through remarkable student scholarship programs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The partnership agreement is designed to optimize outreach and engagement efforts and have program participants work in conjunction with the Coast Guard&#8217;s overall civilian and military officer recruitment efforts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105629\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105629\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-coast-guard-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105629\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-coast-guard-2.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-coast-guard-2-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Servicemembers of the U.S. Coast Guard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We are very excited about this partnership and the opportunities it will provide our students,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>. &ldquo;That includes additional options for financial assistance, academic choices and amazing career opportunities. The agreement also offers research opportunities for the university and the Coast Guard to explore.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Central to this partnership is the Coast Guard&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocoastguard.com\/active-duty-careers\/officer-opportunities\/programs\/college-student-pre-commissioning-initiative\">College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative<\/a> (<abbr>CSPI<\/abbr>) scholarship program that is available to students enrolled at minority serving institutions such as <abbr>UH<\/abbr>. There are currently four <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> students enrolled at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and two at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo.<\/p>\n<p>The Coast Guard&#8217;s Executive Champion for this initiative, Rear <abbr>Adm.<\/abbr> Lunday, is committed to ensuring this joint effort is successful. His previous endeavor with Virginia State University, while serving as Assistant Commandant for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Technology and Commander of Coast Guard Cyber Command provided insight into the value of this process and engagements with strategically located minority-serving institutions. <abbr title=\"Captain\">Capt.<\/abbr> Ulysses Mullins, the Coast Guard 14th District Chief of Prevention, is spearheading this partnership and will continue to expand outreach and support for joint <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and Coast Guard activities.<\/p>\n<p>Also on this team is Chief Petty Officer Todd Roys, born and raised in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, serving at the Coast Guard Recruiting Office Honolulu. The Coast Guard 14th District will serve as the lead Coast Guard command, working closely with all Coast Guard and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> stakeholders to forge an enduring collaboration.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa is one of 132 Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions nationwide participating in the <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> program.
