For the first time ever, an unmanned aerial vehicle (<abbr>UAV<\/abbr>) delivered supplies to an underway submarine, the <abbr title=\"United States Ship\">USS<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span> a mile off the coast of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The project is a collaboration between the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Pacific Fleet Submarine Force and the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/arl\/\">Applied Research Laboratory<\/a> (<abbr>ARL<\/abbr>) that owns and operates the <abbr>UAV<\/abbr>. Cmdr. Christopher Keithley in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/349544\/comsubpac-and-uh-use-drone-deliver-supplies-submarine\">recent <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Navy online story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rear Adm. Blake Converse, commander of the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Pacific Fleet Submarine Force, agreed and commended the joint effort saying it, &ldquo;has resulted in delivering necessary supplies to submarines that can save time and money, allowing us to stay in the fight.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I see our role at the <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> as protecting those who protect us, whether <span aria-label=\"thats\">that&#699;s<\/span> the military, first responders or our planet,&rdquo; said <strong>Margo Edwards<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> director. &ldquo;This was a great first step toward a viable concept of operation that could be a game-changing capability for the fleet.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The project began more than a year ago when Navy officials approached <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> with the concept. <strong>Josh Levy<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> specialist, provided more than six months of extensive <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> flight training to the four Navy volunteers assigned to the project who would ultimately fly the successful mission. &ldquo;I tried to make the homework tougher than the test, and that approach yielded success,&rdquo; said Levy, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa graduate with a masters degree in marine biology.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the extensive training program, <strong>Aricia Argyris<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> mechanical engineer, developed and refined innovative technology, specifically, a &ldquo;snag&rdquo; pole and payload release mechanism, for the <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> under the mentorship of <strong>Ted Ralston<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>ARL<\/abbr> <abbr>UAV<\/abbr> director.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The opportunities are here in M&#257;noa, and I encourage students to seek them out and take advantage of them.<br \/>Aricia Argyris<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Born and raised on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, Argyris interned at the lab before being hired full time after graduating from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa with a mechanical engineering degree in 2018. Less than a year into her new job, she used additive manufacturing techniques to rapidly mature the technology, enabling the Navy sailors to recommend modifications to the custom-designed components on demand. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have always had a love for robotics and I wanted to do something that involved creating, designing and building.
