said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;Housed in our sustainable new data center in the Information Technology Building, this state-of-the-art high-performance computing system will support some of our major new initiatives including our work to understand our water systems in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, our study of the microbiome of our environment, and our new multi-disciplinary data science institute.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The three initiatives <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/epscor\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research<\/a>\u2019s &#699;Ike Wai project, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/index.php\/research\/microbiome-research-main-menu\">Center for Microbiome Analysis through Island Knowledge and Investigation<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/datascience.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Data Science Institute<\/a> all conduct work with advanced computational needs that will benefit from the new computing cluster.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The High-Performance Computing cluster will support and elevate the leading-edge work of our faculty and students across campus,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong>. &ldquo;The fact that both faculty and students will have access to this free, shared resource is truly exciting and transformational.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-data-science-mana-logo-300x169.png\" alt=\"Mana logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-105249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-data-science-mana-logo-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-data-science-mana-logo-130x73.png 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-data-science-mana-logo-630x353.png 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-data-science-mana-logo.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>New computing cluster<\/h2>\n<p>The new cluster, named Mana, will add graphics processing unit (<abbr>GPU<\/abbr>) nodes for intensive computing among other upgrades to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> high-performance computing (<abbr>HPC<\/abbr>) cluster and support 15 early career, pre-tenure faculty with research programs in data science.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Information and Computer Sciences Assistant Professor <strong>Peter Sadowski<\/strong> explained how modern artificial intelligence (<abbr>AI<\/abbr>) and machine learning require <abbr>GPU<\/abbr> machines. &ldquo;My research focuses on <abbr>AI<\/abbr> and machine learning for data science applications in precision health, oceanography, high-energy physics and astronomy,&rdquo; Sadowski said. &ldquo;The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>HPC<\/abbr> is crucial to my work. It enables members of my group to routinely train deep neural networks on 50 <abbr>GPU<\/abbr>s simultaneously.
