(Photo Credit: Han Tseng)<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two departments in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa are rated among the top 50 programs in the nation, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/world-university-rankings\/2020\/world-ranking#!\/page\/0\/length\/25\/sort_by\/rank\/sort_order\/asc\/cols\/stats\">2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><p>Geography ranks 37 and the Department of Anthropology\u2019s archaeology program is tied for 39 among <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> universities and colleges. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104834\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-css-anthropology-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-104834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-css-anthropology-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-css-anthropology-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-css-anthropology-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-css-anthropology.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">C. Founded in 1932, the program is home to faculty with expertise in environmental geography, human geography and geospatial information science. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our knowledgeable faculty have been getting positive attention in the news lately for their subject matter expertise, so their important role in social science and humanistic study is appropriately reflected in this national ranking,&rdquo; said <strong>Christian Peterson<\/strong>, chair and associate professor of anthropology. Established in 1934, the department advances research in areas such as cultural, ecological and medical anthropology, in addition to applied archaeology and the archaeology of complex societies. <\/p>\n<p>Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong> added, &ldquo;Geography and anthropology are about the exploration of not only the human relationship with the environment, but also human social, cultural and biological diversity.
