The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa Kennedy Theatre celebrates the life and career of Emeritus Professor Terence Knapp<\/strong><\/a> on Saturday, October 19. The program begins on the main stage at Kennedy Theatre at 5:30 p.m. followed at 6:30 p.m. with High Tea and “talk story” on the lanai. The doors open at 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Knapp passed away on August 12 at the age of 87.<\/p>\n

Knapp, a classically trained actor, had an illustrious and wide ranging career on multiple continents before he was invited to Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> in 1970 by Earl Ernst<\/strong>, the founding chairman of the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Department of Theatre and Dance. He became a mainstay in stage productions in the islands, working with many of the local theatres as well as the Honolulu Symphony, Hawaii Opera Theatre and PBS<\/abbr> Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

While Knapp brought many memorable characters to life on stage, he is perhaps best known for his performances as Father Damien, “the leper priest of Molokaʻi<\/span>.” In 1976, Knapp directed himself in Aldyth Morris\u2019 one-man show Damien<\/em>, and performed the role internationally. Damien was broadcast nationally on PBS<\/abbr> and won numerous national awards. Knapp was recognized by the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature as “Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Adopted World Class Actor” for the role.<\/p>\n

Other favorite roles at Kennedy Theatre included Henry Higgins in Pygmalion<\/em>, the title role in The Miser<\/em> and King Lear in Carol Sorgenfrei\u2019s Cordelia Victorious<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Knapp received the UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching in 1977, and, in 2001, the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival was dedicated to Knapp in perpetuity.<\/p>\n
