The honor is reserved for only 12 of the 3,500 family medicine trainees in the United States and recognizes outstanding residents for leadership, civic involvement, exemplary patient care and aptitude for and interest in family medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The honorees receive a $1,000 scholarship and a trip to the <abbr>AAFP<\/abbr> Family Medicine Experience conference in Philadelphia to receive the award in person.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was an honor to represent <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at the national conference,&rdquo; said Witten. &ldquo;I am grateful for the support of <strong> Ernel Roque<\/strong>, Chapter Executive of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hafp.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Academy of Family Physicians<\/a> (<abbr>HAFP<\/abbr>), <strong>Dr. Steven Hankins<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Family Medicine Associate Program Director, and <strong>Dr. Seiji Yamada<\/strong>, mentor and faculty advisor, for encouraging me to apply for this award. I also want to thank the <abbr>HAFP<\/abbr> for supporting my attendance at hands-on simulations at the conference in Philadelphia.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Witten entered <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>)<\/a> by completing the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/ed-programs\/imi\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> Post-Baccalaureate Program<\/a> and graduated from <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> in 2017.
