href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> has been awarded more than $6 million in grants by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/nathawaiian\/index.html\">U.S. Department of Education\u2019s Native Hawaiian Education Program<\/a> to support its goal of becoming a model indigenous serving institution.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the Alaska Native-Serving and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions Education Competitive Grants Program is to provide grants to eligible institutions of higher education to enable them to improve and expand their capacity to serve Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> awardees include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ke <span aria-label=\"Ala\">&#699;Ala<\/span> Hele o Ka <span aria-label=\"Naauao\">Na&#699;auao<\/span>: The Pathway of Knowledge<\/strong><br \/>\n$395,094<br \/>\nWindward Community College will implement a two-year pathway to the associate of arts in Hawaiian studies which focuses on <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">&#699;ahupua&#699;a<\/span> (Hawaiian land management) studies to increase the number of majors, student success, full-time status students and graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huliamahi: Joining Together to Support Guided Pathways to Success<\/strong><br \/>\n$367,991<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa will develop a comprehensive educational pipeline and improve and expand applied multi-disciplinary research and networking opportunities for Native Hawaiian students, faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M\u0101nai-a-M\u0101ui: Transforming Institutions with an Indigenous Framework<\/strong><br \/>\n$450,000<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College will collaborate on a joint effort to transform the institutions by incorporating Native Hawaiian culture, values and traditions to impact student success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ulu Kini<\/strong><br \/>\n$396,096<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> seeks to expand Kauhale distance education activity, incorporate the <span aria-label=\"HaakUmalae\">Ha&#699;ak&#363;malae<\/span> Indigenizing Curriculum Model and improve the campus\u2019 distance education infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ke Ala <span aria-label=\"Anuu\">&#699;Anu&#699;u<\/span>: The Path of Steps<\/strong><br \/>\n$434,664<br \/>\nLeeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will endeavor to increase Native Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian enrollment and graduation rates in <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr>-related fields, fall-to-fall retention rates and the number of students matriculating and graduating with a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>-related degree.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span aria-label=\"Waa\">Wa&#699;a<\/span> Kaulua: The Foundational Journey to Success<\/strong><br \/>\n$351,359<br \/>\nLeeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s pre-existing Going to Finish On Time program will be expanded by infusing the peer mentor training program, counseling sessions and enrichment activities with new curricula and providing part-time students and second-year students with tailored support.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span aria-label=\"Kelekaa\">Keleka&#699;a<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Honaauao\">Ho&#699;na&#699;auao<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n$449,660<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> aim to significantly increase the number of Native Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian students persisting to degree attainment through facility upgrades, access to distance education bachelor degrees and enhanced student support.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span aria-label=\"HoopUliko\">Ho&#699;op&#363;liko<\/span> Kumu Hou: To Sprout New Teachers<\/strong><br \/>\n$400,000<br \/>\n<abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will partner with stakeholders in the region to significantly increase the number of Native Hawaiian and part-Hawaiian teachers earning their bachelor\u2019s degree and entering the region\u2019s secondary classrooms in the next five years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kahua Paepae Ola Project<\/strong><br \/>\n$360,157<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> will provide integrated, holistic student support services, modernize learning and teaching facilities, increase tutoring and mentoring support, expand student support to improve transitions and retention rates and create a Native Hawaiian kauhale (meeting place).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kumuola: Caregivers of Life<\/strong><br \/>\n$449,638<br \/>\nWindward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> will develop a culturally relevant human development and family studies (<abbr>HDFS<\/abbr>) curricular pathway to the baccalaureate institution and a comprehensive support program to facilitate student success, retention, transfer, graduation and career exploration in the <abbr>HDFS<\/abbr> pathway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>K\u016bkalahale: Building an Indigenous-Serving Institution through Professional Development<\/strong><br \/>\n$450,000<br \/>\nHonolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> will build the capacity of their faculty, staff and administration to develop and sustain culturally appropriate and culturally relevant strategies that k\u012bpaipai (encourage) current and future Native Hawaiian students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huliamahi: Joining Together to Support Guided Pathways to Success<\/strong><br \/>\n$343,637<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s instructional faculty, counselors and Native Hawaiian student support personnel will develop collaborative academic and student support strategies to improve Native Hawaiian re-enrollment, degree completion and transfer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project <span aria-label=\"NaU\">N&#257;&#699;&#363;<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n$400,000<br \/>\n<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> seeks to increase Native Hawaiian student enrollment by offering opportunities for place-based, service-learning activities and increasing engagement and retention and graduation rates through campus-wide activities and improving learning environments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He <span aria-label=\"Poai\">P&#333;&#699;ai<\/span> Loli\u014d: Innovative Learning Environments and Workforce Development<\/strong><br \/>\n$400,000<br \/>\n<abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, with funding assistance from the Department of Education, proposes to renovate two spaces to create classrooms and specialized learning spaces that support student success and advances inclusive and collaborative learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span aria-label=\"Ike\">&#699;Ike<\/span> Pili <span aria-label=\"Oihana\">&#699;Oihana<\/span> (Professional Knowledge) Project<\/strong><br \/>\n$400,000<br \/>\n<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College will create a collaborative learning space to offer faculty and staff new professional development opportunities that will improve and enhance connections with students using a student development model utilizing indigenous education or storytelling called
