The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa College of Education\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/academics\/kinesiology-rehabilitation-science\">Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> is looking at ways to reduce that number. The department\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Concussion Awareness &#38; Management Program (<abbr>HCAMP<\/abbr>) has initiated a three-year concussion study, monitoring live-track head impacts at high school football practices and games.<\/p>\n<p>Pac-Five and St. Louis School football teams are participating in the <abbr>HCAMP<\/abbr>. Each football player is outfitted with a specially designed helmet, which houses an impact-monitoring system that transmits data to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate assistants who then notify team athletic trainers to assess for possible concussion.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The goal is to decrease the number of impacts that these athletes take so the cumulative effects of impacts will be decreased,&rdquo; said <strong>Ross Oshiro<\/strong>, of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science and <abbr>HCAMP<\/abbr> coordinator.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104445\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/helmet_football_concussion-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"football players\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-104445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/helmet_football_concussion-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/helmet_football_concussion-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/helmet_football_concussion-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/helmet_football_concussion.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pac-Five Head Coach Kip Botelho (in background) watching drills during a recent practice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the study\u2019s first year, research personnel will be on-site at practices and games to monitor how much impact players sustain. Athletic trainers will be notified of high magnitude impacts and be able to respond immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Research shows that an average high school athlete takes more than three weeks to recover from a concussion.<\/p>\n<p>In the study\u2019s second year, Pac-Five and St. Louis players will receive the<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiiconcussion.com\/hutt808\"> <abbr>HuTT<\/abbr>&#174;808 intervention<\/a>, which incorporates helmetless tackling and blocking training under the supervision of coaches who will have been taught the technique. In addition, a third school will be added to the study and baseline impact data will be collected.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it\u2019s a responsibility for us, as coaches, to do our part in trying to help prevent concussions,&rdquo; said Kip Botelho, Pac-Five head football coach.<\/p>\n<p>Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (<abbr>CTE<\/abbr>) has been linked to specific changes in the brain that affect how the brain works. Research suggests that <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> is caused in part by repeated traumatic brain injuries, including concussions, and repeated hits to the head, called subconcussive head impacts. <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> is a brain disease that can only be diagnosed after death according to the Centers for Disease Control.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a> Dean <strong>Nathan Murata<\/strong> and Erik Swartz, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uml.edu\/Health-Sciences\/PT\/\">Department of Physical Therapy and Kinesiology<\/a> at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, are co-principal investigators of the study.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>HUTT<\/abbr>&#174;808 is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goghawaiifoundation.org\/\"><abbr>GOG<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> to reduce head impact exposure in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> high school football players. The foundation was established in memory of the late Gary O.
