Seale)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Sea Grant College Program<\/a> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant) received nearly $1.4 million to establish a new aquaculture-focused collaborative program in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region and explore new aquaculture opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>To fully integrate aquaculture research, outreach and education in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant and its partners were awarded nearly $1.2 million to revitalize, solidify, and expand an aquaculture-focused, collaborative program that will be socially, geographically, and economically inclusive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_103719\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103719\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-sea-grant-aquaculture-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person holding sponges\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-103719\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-sea-grant-aquaculture-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-sea-grant-aquaculture-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-sea-grant-aquaculture-3-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-sea-grant-aquaculture-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103719\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aquaculture extension faculty from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>  Sea Grant provide expertise in growing farmed sponges.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Darren Lerner<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant director and principal investigator, said &ldquo;This funding will assist in creating a hub which fully integrates research, extension, and education services directed towards supporting the continued development and enhancement of indigenous aquaculture practices and the aquaculture industry in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant was among several Sea Grant programs around the country to receive funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (<abbr>NOAA<\/abbr>). The 42 funded projects will help spur the development of a sustainable marine and coastal aquaculture industry in the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These investments will help advance <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> aquaculture in sustainable, thoughtful ways using the best science and talent across the country,&rdquo; said Jonathan Pennock, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.noaa.gov\/\">National Sea Grant College Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Exploring potential new aquaculture industries<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant was also the recipient of two additional grants totaling $200,000.
