  {"id":103272,"date":"2019-09-13T13:04:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T23:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=103272"},"modified":"2019-09-13T13:04:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-13T23:04:00","slug":"partnership-provides-cybersecurity-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/13\/partnership-provides-cybersecurity-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"Partnership provides cybersecurity lessons statewide"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/honolulu-cybercamp-2019.jpg\" alt=\"Group at GenCyber camp\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-103283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/honolulu-cybercamp-2019.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/honolulu-cybercamp-2019-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/honolulu-cybercamp-2019-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> helped train 170 students from across the state in cybersecurity in summer 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/its\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Information Technology Services<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medb.org\/\">Maui Economic Development Board<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemworkshawaii.org\/home\">STEMworks<\/a> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges\u2019 advanced technology training consortium, the <a href=\"https:\/\/pcatt.org\/\">Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training<\/a> (<abbr>PCATT<\/abbr>), partnered in GenCyber <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> 2019, providing enrichment opportunities to train the youngest generation of cybersecurity professionals and teachers through summer camps.<\/p>\n<p>This year, seven GenCyber high school and middle school camps were held on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>, Maui, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Over the past five years, GenCyber <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> held 25 camps to train 701 teachers and 25 camps to train 683 students,&rdquo; said <strong>Steven Auerbach<\/strong>, director of <abbr>PCATT<\/abbr>. &ldquo;GenCyber students currently are pursuing college computer science and cybersecurity programs and achieving industry recognized certification. Ensuring that enough young people are inspired to direct their talents in this area is critical to the future of the country\u2019s national and economic security as there is more reliance on cyber-based technology.<\/p>\n<p>Camps are free, and funding is provided jointly by the National Security Agency (<abbr>NSA<\/abbr>), the National Science Foundation and Information Systems Security Association\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> chapter. Participants learned about cyber hygiene, networking, coding, basic forensics, classical and modern cryptographic systems among many other cybersecurity related topics. They also learned about circuits, soldering and computing using Raspberry <abbr>PI<\/abbr>s and Microbits.<\/p>\n<p>The camps culminated with a Capture-the-Flag hacking event where students used their newly acquired skills to hack and defend their way to victory.
