  {"id":103162,"date":"2019-09-12T13:11:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T23:11:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=103162"},"modified":"2019-09-13T08:28:37","modified_gmt":"2019-09-13T18:28:37","slug":"marshall-island-education-graduates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/12\/marshall-island-education-graduates\/","title":{"rendered":"First Marshall Island education cohort graduates"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_103188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103188\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/uhm-education-PACMED.jpg\" alt=\"group of people\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/uhm-education-PACMED.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/uhm-education-PACMED-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/uhm-education-PACMED-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-103188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graduation day for the first <abbr>PACMED<\/abbr> cohort in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first cohort of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\">College of Education<\/a> Pacific Master\u2019s in Education (<abbr>PACMED<\/abbr>) program graduated in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (<abbr>RMI<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PACMED<\/abbr>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/cs\/\">Department of Curriculum Studies<\/a>, focuses on culturally-responsive, Pacific, placed-based <abbr>STEAM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Professors <strong>Paul Deering<\/strong> and <strong>Deborah Zuercher<\/strong> and colleagues digitally deliver <abbr>PACMED<\/abbr>\u2019s curriculum to students across the Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa and <abbr>RMI<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Pacific leaders are needed to solve Pacific problems,&rdquo; said Zuercher. &ldquo;<abbr>PACMED<\/abbr> builds on indigenous knowledge of place and culture when addressing emerging problems such as sea-level rising, health, illegal fishing, food security and sovereignty.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The graduating cohort of 17 Marshallese students included classroom teachers as well as high-ranking administrators and brings the program\u2019s combined total to approximately 300 graduates.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>PACMED<\/abbr> is a two-year program focused on the nine <abbr>RMI<\/abbr> Public School Standards for Teachers, plus a tenth standard focused on place-based <abbr>STEAM<\/abbr> teaching. During the semester, courses are delivered in a live online classroom, while summer classes are in-person and hands-on.
