(Photo credit: Alexandra Runyan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As part of the Marshall Islands Nearshore Training (<abbr>MINT<\/abbr>) program, <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> faculty led two <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo students and eight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmi.edu\/\">College of the Marshall Islands<\/a> (<abbr>CMI<\/abbr>) students throughout Majuro and Arno Atoll collecting data on water quality, algae cover and reef composition. The students became proficient at field research methods and identification of the different types of corals and algae surrounding their islands.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo undergraduate <strong>Sabrina Bejang<\/strong> did not think she would ever choose marine biology for a career. Bejang, like many young Marshallese women, grew up wary of the ocean and knew little of the coral reef systems that make up Majuro atoll, the capital of the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Then she took an introductory marine science course as a student at <abbr>CMI<\/abbr> that changed the trajectory of her future.<\/p>\n<p>Bejang, now a junior at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo majoring in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mare.hawaii.edu\/\">marine science<\/a>, and recent <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo graduate <strong>Gordon LeBehn<\/strong> were selected to participate in the eight-week &ldquo;bootcamp&rdquo; for budding Marshallese marine scientists.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102907\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/hilo-mint-research-3.jpg\" alt=\"students and teacher looking at algae samples\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-102907\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/hilo-mint-research-3.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/hilo-mint-research-3-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students analyze algae samples collected from Majuro lagoon with the help of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo undergraduate and teaching assistant Alexa Runyan. (Photo credit: Marshall Islands Conservation Society)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Associate Professor <strong>Steve Colbert<\/strong>, Professor <strong>Karla McDermid<\/strong> and marine science\/biology undergraduate student <strong>Alexandra Runyan<\/strong> flew to the atoll nation to lead the place-based learning program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They live on atolls and they rely heavily on their marine resources,&rdquo; says Colbert. &ldquo;There\u2019s a lot of programs going on there to understand their marine resources, but there are not local people trained to take those positions. Now you have these 10 students who were trained in these methods and have done research themselves in the Marshall Islands.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The students did the research themselves and the skills they gained will greatly benefit the communities and environment in the Marshall Islands.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A lot of people from the Marshallese government and NGO conservation community were excited about the <abbr>MINT<\/abbr> program and were asking us if we had any students that could go join them for upcoming research cruises,&rdquo; says McDermid. &ldquo;These students already have the skills. They learned how to use the Coral Point Count software package for analyzing coral reefs and carry out field research to assess coral cover, algal growth, and nutrients in the water. This experience gives these 10 students a jumpstart in terms of career opportunities. (Photo credit: Madeline Cochran)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This collaborative <abbr>MINT<\/abbr> program was funded through a National Science Foundation Rapid Response Research grant, &ldquo;Pacific Island Reefs Under Siege\u2013An Undergraduate Training Partnership,&rdquo; secured by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Professor <strong>Rebecca Ostertag<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/uhintern\/\">Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science<\/a> Director <strong>Sharon Ziegler-Chong<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ostertag says the resulting <abbr>MINT<\/abbr> program was designed to shore up expertise in both the students and faculty in a location in need of experienced marine scientists.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The main idea was that the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo faculty would provide expertise and capacity building, and would go to the Marshall Islands to provide training for the students and for the <abbr>CMI<\/abbr> faculty,&rdquo; explains Ostertag. &ldquo;Part of this is to enhance the marine science degree at <abbr>CMI<\/abbr> by giving the faculty more tools and training in how to do research in their environment.
