No stigma was cast on one struggling with mental health. These are simple words but, when spoken about a hospital administrator, they constitute powerful praise.<\/p>\n<p>These heartfelt sentiments and more were expressed at a recent ceremony honoring Art Ushijima, who is retiring in January 2020 as president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.queens.org\/\">The Queen&#8217;s Health Systems<\/a>, after nearly 30 years of service.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>, dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), presided over the ceremony where praise flowed in from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> medical school chairs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102935\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102935\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-jabsom-ushijima-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Man at podium\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-102935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-jabsom-ushijima-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-jabsom-ushijima-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-jabsom-ushijima-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/manoa-jabsom-ushijima.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102935\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Art Ushijima<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During Ushijima&#8217;s long tenure leading Queen&#8217;s, its board of trustees has contributed more than $10 million to support medical education at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Through stipends for promising minority or disadvantaged college students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/offices-programs\/imi\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> (those who seek to heal) Post-Baccalaureate Program<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>To fund two-year <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/trainees-in-research\/residents-fellows-in-research\/\">fellowships for researchers<\/a> investigating health disparities.<\/li>\n<li>To send medical students on <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/ed-programs\/md-program\/md-curriculum\/md-curriculum-overview\/clinical-skills\/\">clinical clerkships<\/a> to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island and <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;What&#8217;s my legacy? I have none, but I work for one,&rdquo; Ushijima said. &ldquo;It is the legacy of our founders. Whatever we all have done, it&#8217;s the translation of that mission to improve the health of Native Hawaiians and all the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> presented Ushijima with a feather lei made from rooster feathers.
