Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) program researcher has been nationally honored for expanding a science training program that was initially geared toward university students in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to those throughout the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p><strong>George Hui<\/strong>, a malaria vaccine researcher in the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/tropmed\/\">Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology<\/a>, received a certificate for starting and expanding <abbr title=\"Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons\">STEP-UP<\/abbr> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/research-funding\/research-programs\/diversity-programs\/research-training-opportunities-students\/short-term-research-experience-underrepresented-persons-step-up?dkrd=lgapp0001\">Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons<\/a>. Burns School of Medicine\">JABSOM<\/abbr> researcher George Hui, middle, accepts his certificate flanked by Lawrence Agodoa and Griffin Rodgers of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hui began the program at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> in 2002, initially as a contractor to the <abbr>STEP-UP<\/abbr> principal investigator at the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles. In 2003, he competed successfully for a grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (<abbr>NIDDK<\/abbr>) at the National Institutes of Health as principal investigator to establish the <abbr>STEP-UP<\/abbr> program at JABSOM.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>NIDDK<\/abbr>, which funds national <abbr>STEP-UP<\/abbr>, provided additional funding to Hui to expand the program to other Pacific Islands, including American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and the republics of the Marshall Islands and Palau.<\/p>\n<p>Hui renamed the program Pacific <abbr>STEP-UP<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With George at the helm, not only has Pacific <abbr>STEP-UP<\/abbr> opened doors and broken glass ceilings, it&#8217;s created a path to biomedical research throughout the Pacific, one that can help improve public health, extend life and eliminate disabilities in a way that is so important to the local communities,&rdquo; said <abbr>NIDDK<\/abbr> Director Griffin Rodgers, who presented the certificate to Hui with Lawrence Agodoa, <abbr>NIDDK<\/abbr> medical director.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/national-recognition-for-jabsom-program-extending-research-opportunities-to-rural-students-in-hawai%ca%bbi-and-the-pacific-islands\/\">See the full story on the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Tina Shelton<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>George Hui is presented a certificate from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease for growing a <abbr title=\"John A.
